Sunday School News
Is Allah the
Father of Jesus Christ?
Do you know any Muslims? Have any Muslim friends? If you do,
how much do you know about their religion and are you thinking about ways to
build bridges to them? If you don’t know any Muslims personally, would it still
be worth your while to find out more about the fastest growing religion in
North America—and in the world—Islam? And what about that question that keeps
cropping up in one political context or another: Is Islam a religion that’s intrinsically intolerant of other
religions, as Israel was under the Mosaic law of the Old Testament?
Last
week in adult Sunday School class we started a 5-week study of Islam and
Christianity. But it’s not too late to join us. The core of the class is a
4-part DVD series by Professor Timothy George that we’ll start showing as soon
as we finish watching the DVD “Muhammad:
Legacy of Prophet,” a
sympathetic descriptive account of the life of Muhammad and of the teachings of
Islam. Timothy George is the dean of the Beeson Divinity School at Samford
University in Alabama. Bring a notebook, a Bible and an eagerness to think and
learn. Ron Lutjens will be leading the class.

behind us, there is much to discuss and plan. If you have never been to one of
our meetings and would like to come, please feel free. We have a wonderful time
of discussion and fellowship. If you have any questions, please feel free to
contact Cheryl Cook at cook_12024@sbcglobal.net. I look forward to
seeing you.
A special thanks to Kathy Jennings and her leadership this
past year, and also to many of you who stepped in to help host fellowships, showers,
receptions and other events. You have served us all well!

Grace & Peace Winter Shelter
Sunday Morning
Breakfast Preparation
The Grace & Peace Winter Shelter at 5574 Delmar Blvd is
need of Sunday morning breakfast hosts. Thanks to the Barrs/Leung group who are
doing breakfast on January 21! The next time the Shelter needs a group is on Sunday,
February 4. Minimally it takes a team of 3. A group of friends could do
this together, or a prayer group could. If you’d like to help with one of
these, but don’t have partners, talk to Durinda Hood or call the office, and
we’ll see if we can put together a team.
Dates they are looking to fill are
February 4, February 18, March 4, March 18. They’d like to see Old Orchard do a
total of two (January 21 & one other). A full description was given in last
week’s Overture.
We can be thankful that the
Shelter has most of its evening meals filled.
Call Melody Burke, Winter Shelter
Team Leader at 314-367-8959 if you have questions.
—Durinda
Hood
If anyone would like to substitute occasionally or be part of the rotating teams to clean the communion on Sunday after worship, please see Durinda Hood; call or e-mail the church office at 314.962.3795 or office@oldorchardchurch.org.

for the whole family.
Matt Wicker & Emily Magee. Pray for
everything to come together for Emily’s and Matt’s wedding on January 20, and
for the Lord’s blessing on their new life together.
