 Gift Boxes to Brazil

Again this year we are sending boxes of gifts to our brothers and sisters in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Several years ago Leonardo and Alessandra De Carvalho's attended Old Orchard Church while Leo was in Seminary. Upon finishing school, the De Carvalho's went back to Brazil to minister in a poor community in Belo Horizonte. Since then they have planted three churches in some of the poorest parts of the city. Old Orchard has sent teams to serve in these communities three times and we plan to go every other year. Another way that we serve these churches is by sending Christmas gift boxes. So we are asking members of our church to do the following: get an old shoe box, fill it with gifts, including $5 for shipping, and bring it to the church by November 5th. The idea was inspired by The Samaritan's Purse Christmas Box ministry. If you have questions see Pastor Mark.

Please Note:  More copies of the instructions are out in the parlor.

Fund For Cook Family

The Session of Old Orchard Church has established a fund to help meet the financial needs of Bruce & Cheryl Cook. As Ron shared with the congregation some time ago, her physician is treating Cheryl as an ALS (aka Lou Gehrig’s) patient. Due to her health, she is unable to continue much of the employment (since June 2006) that has helped meet the Cooks expenses. She continues to do some work (as our accompanist and one other small job), but no longer is she able to contribute financially in the same manner as before. Cheryl applied for Social Security benefits and has been approved for them. Those benefits will begin in January 2007, but will not totally replace what she used to contribute. Also, there are increased medical expenses.

We invite you to contribute to this fund. Checks can be written to Old Orchard Church and designated “Cook Family.” You can put your gift in the collection plate or mail it to the church office at Old Orchard Church, 639 Amelia, Webster Groves, MO 63119. These gifts will be anonymous and tax-deductible. If you have any questions, please talk to one of the elders.

Fundraiser for Cooks

The following invitation comes from several friends of the Cook family who know the Cooks through Jesse’s friends. They have organized themselves to sponsor the following fundraiser.

A gathering of friends and family will be held at Blackburn Park in Webster Groves to benefit the Cook family. Cheryl Cook has been battling some neurological issues since early spring and it is our hope to raise funds to assist Cheryl and her family during this difficult time.

We invite you to join us on Sunday, October 15th any time between 3:00 pm-7:00 pm. Join us for bar-b-que, washers, Frisbee and fun. Please bring your own cooler and a side dish (with a serving spoon) to share. Bar-b-qued hot dogs and dessert will be provided.

You'll find us at the main pavilion, rain or shine. Any monetary donation is greatly appreciated.

RSVP/Questions, call: Sharon Ayres at 314-962-6472 or Ann Riti at 314-781-6447.

--Submitted by Sharon Ayres, Cook family friend

[See info in separate announcement if you want to contribute to the Cook Family Fund without attending this event.]
