Looking for Input

Over the last month and a half or so, the Session has been brainstorming with the leadership of Old Orchard Church—with the deacons, ministry coordinators, and prayer group leaders—about “where we go from here” as a church as the renovations wind up, as we thank God for his faithfulness to us for the first 25 years of our life, and as we think about what we should be focusing on as we begin the second 25 years.  This is a proper preliminary part of the pastoral evaluations we do here every 4 years.  The Session has scheduled the first quarter of 2007 to do a pastoral evaluation of both me and Mark Tucker.  The focus of these evaluations is always, “Do we think x is the right pastor to continue leading us, given where we believe the Lord is leading us?”  So between now and the first quarter of 2007 we want to focus on the latter half of that question, and take an honest and fersh look at the life of our church as try to discern where the Lord wants to lead us.

In these conversations with the middle level leadership of the church we’ve identified some of our strengths, but also some of our weaknesses, areas that need attention.  We have formed 4 committees to think through and discuss these areas: 1)  Outreach (chaired by Mark Tucker):  thinking about ways we can reach out as a church to more people with the truth of the gospel; 2) Bridging (chaired by Jack Easterling):  thinking about ways we can make our worship service more user-friendly to visitors and seekers; 3)  Discipleship (chaired by Paul Stefanski): thinking about ways to help our people grow stronger in their  faith in Christ and their knowledge of Scripture—this includes thinking about adult Sunday School, ministry to women, basic discipleship-oriented Bible studies and training, etc; and 4)  Prayer groups (chaired by Joel Keen):  thinking about whether or not we should change our approach to our small group ministry and why or why not.

We wanted the whole fellowship to know about the work of these 4 committees so that you can pray for them and give to any of them feedback. They will be meeting a couple of times through the summer, so if you would like to join any of them, or at least give feedback to them, please contact the chairman, who will be glad to give you a voice.

The plan is to come back in the Fall and share tentative conclusions or lay out different options.  The elders will then consider it all and try to discern before the Lord how to move forward.  Let’s be asking him to melt us and mold us and fill us, so that he can use us to push forward his kingdom in the world.
