OOC Tidbits — September 10, 2006

 

Welcome to Old Orchard Church!

We welcome you to our worship, and thank you for your patience while we renovate our building. We invite you to use our child care services to infants through children in kindergarten, located in the church building basement. Please see nursery details below. Also, visit our Sunday School, offered for all ages (9 a.m. on Sunday mornings).  If you would like to find out more about Old Orchard and what we are about, please fill out one of our visitor forms.

 

Sunday School News

Sunday School classes resumed today. Classes are available for children ages 3 through high school.

For adults, we are offering a 3-week class, “The Da Vinci Code.” What you should know about the novel, about the four gospels, and about early Christianity if you want to talk intelligently with your friends and if you want to be encouraged in your own conviction that Christianity is true and historically reliable.

Dates offered:  September 10, 17, 24. 9-10 a.m. in the Milligan House. Coffee will be served. Ron Lutjens

 

Overture Deadline—New Editor Wanted

Today is the deadline for the next Overture (our newsletter) which comes out next Sunday, September 17. Susan O’Neal is Editor for the week. All submissions need to be signed. Please place your articles in the Overture mail slot (currently in the coat room).

New Editor Wanted:  If you’d be interested in taking a turn once every two months (six times during the year), let me know. Access to computer and internet needed. See me if you want to know more.        —Durinda Hood

 

Children’s Ministries

Nursery is offered for infants & children through Kindergarten age. Our nurseries have been returned to the church building’s basement!

·   Infants & Toddlers Nursery for infants — 35 months begins at 10 a.m.

·   Preschool nursery:  Begins at 10:00 a.m. for 3 & 4 year olds and 10:50 a.m. for 5 through K. Children ages 3 and 4 can be in the nursery at the beginning of worship, and then the older children (5 through K) remain with their parents until 10:50 a.m. when children will be dismissed. Nursery is now located in the church basement.

·   Parents:  please pick up your children from the nurseries immediately after worship.

Children’s Worship. For Grades 1-5. Our Children’s Worship time will begin again on September 17. This fall we will meet every week except on a fifth Sunday in a month. Beginning on the 10th our dismissal time for both the preschool nursery and children’s worship will be changed to 10:50 in order for the children to be present for Children’s Lessons and the Moment for Missions during worship.

 

25th Anniversary Picnic

All invited to come to our 25th Anniversary Picnic at the home of Jack & Lois Easterling. See info & directions below. Maps are available in the parlor.

When:  Saturday, September 16, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

(Lunch at noon)

Food:  Meat will be provided (deacons will be grilling again), but we ask you to bring food according to the first letter of your last name:

A-H/Favorite Side Dish — I-P/Salad — Q-Z/Dessert

Where:  693 Hwy F, Defiance, MO 63341/636.798.2998.

Directions:  Take Hwy 40 West, cross the Missouri River to Hwy 94, Exit 10. Go south (left) on Hwy 94 (7 miles). (follow the signs for the Daniel Boone Home). Turn Right on Hwy F, approximately 1.5 miles. Look for 693 Hwy F on the right side after Frisella Nursery. Drive up the driveway. The Easterlings will have balloons on their mailbox.

25th Anniversary Schedule

This fall we are doing a few things in connection with our 25th Anniversary. Please note the following:

·   Wednesday, September 27. Day of Prayer & Fasting.

·   Sunday, October 1. 25th anniversary worship, building dedication. Parlor Fellowship and Art Show after worship. Laurent Torno will display his art work.

·   Later in October we will have an Art Show by artists in our congregation.

·   Sunday evening, November 19, we will have an Open House for OOC neighbors to see our renovated building.

·    

On the Calendar!

English Conversations have begun to meet again on Fridays 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at Milligan House (but probably not September 15). See Hurvey or Dorothy Woodson for more information.

 

Adult Choir is rehearsing again. New voices invited! Meets Thursdays at 7:15 p.m. See Greg Roig for more information.

 

Men’s Bible Study. Men, you’re invited to a Men’s Bible Study led by Seth Dyrness. Next one will be Saturday, September 23, at 7:45 a.m. at Milligan House. See Seth if you have questions!

 

Arts Ministry. Artists in the congregation are invited to come at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12 to meet together at Milligan House. See Ron Lutjens if you have questions.

 

Durinda Hood will be on vacation this week (9/11 through 9/15) and not in the church office.

 

 

Hurvey & Dorothy Woodson will be away Sept. 11-22.

 

Tutoring Opportunities

It’s the beginning of the school year, and once again students will need help with their studies. Consider working with a child in the City of St. Louis (north or south) or the Rock-Hill or Webster area. Here are opportunities. Please note that we’ve added South City Church’s ministry to the list.

 

Gateway for Kids is an outreach ministry of South City Church. Gateway for Kid's goal is to share the love of Jesus Christ with the youth who live in South St. Louis. Our after school program will be starting up in October and we are looking for more volunteers who will come and partner with us. 

Tuesdays from 3:00-6:00—a discipleship class for grades 6-8; Wednesday from 3:00-5:30— is homework help for grades 4th on up, and Thursday from 4:00-6:00 is reading tutoring for grades K-5. Volunteers need to commit to

coming once a week.

Tutor training is during the first week of October, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th depending on which day you volunteer for.  The ministry office is at 2715 Cherokee St.  Please contact Molly Hammett if you are interested in finding out more information: 314.276.8407, mollyb77@hotmail.com

 

Firm Foundation Tutoring Program. Member of Restore St. Louis and New City Fellowship (PCA). Tutoring location:  one block east of Skinker just inside city limits. After-school tutoring program. Tutors come for 1 1/2 hours/week, choosing day and time that works best for them. Elementary students:  4:15-5:45 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays. Middle school or senior high students come on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6 to 7:30 p.m. 

Students work with same student each week on homework, devotions, academic activities which are all provided. Educational background not needed, just a desire to show children the love of Christ. If interested, contact Laurie Jones at 726.2302 ext. 33 or by e-mail:

William Yandell Tutoring Program. Sponsored by Webster-Rock Hill Ministries. Starting September 26, this program will begin again. Volunteer tutors are wanted.

Location:  Rock Hill Baptist Church, 9125 Manchester Road, Brentwood, MO 63144.

When:  Tutoring takes place on Tuesdays, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. beginning September 26. You will be matched with a child to tutor. The program will provide all support, supplies, snacks. Substitutes are available.

Who Can Tutor:  Any academically strong high school or college student or adults can tutor. Substitute volunteers welcomed.

Volunteer Orientation will be on Tuesday, September 19, 7-8 p.m. (Info provided if you are unable to attend.)

Newborn Diapers Wanted

Bethany Christian Services is in need of newborn diapers to give to birthmoms who decide to parent. You are invited to help to meet this need. Please give diapers to Debbie Pendergrass who will deliver diapers to Bethany to distribute.

Bethany in St. Louis is a crisis pregnancy ministry that offers free counseling, as well as domestic and international adoption services. Hal and Debbie Pendergrass serve as foster parents for infants being placed for adoption through Bethany.

 

South City Church—Nursery Items Wanted!

Please note, beginning today, South City Church is now meeting Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m.!

Your daughter church, South City Church, is moving our nursery to a larger space in the building at St. Luke's.  We will have space now for more toys, and there will be a nursing mother's room off of the nursery. We would love

to have any of your old baby/toddler things for the nursery (ages infant through 3 years). We would especially love to have a few comfortable chairs for the nursing room, a table for changing, books, book shelves, rugs, bean bags, toddler toys, toy bins, etc.  Please call

Bring Food Any Sunday

You are invited to make donations of non-perishable food, individual sizes. Container is at Milligan House.

Suggested shopping list:  canned meat, boxed meals, large & small soups, tomato products, fruit, vegetables, beans, rice or pasta, and ramen noodles.
